Review: Deeper, Pete Belasco, Compendia

By Richard Paton

DEEPER

Pete Belasco, Compendia

It just wouldn't be right, somehow, to listen to "Deeper" during daylight hours. Or, for that matter, at any time other than late at night, with a gentle breeze blowing through an open window, a favorite cocktail, the company of a special person, the stereo low ...You get the picture.

It's easy to be carried away on the wings of imagining when Belasco, who on this CD puts the "ooh" in smooth, performs mellow and soulful tracks, his voice reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. Singing over relaxed, suave arrangements, Belasco crafts the sonic equivalent of a romantic invitation.

He wrote all the songs, plays saxophone and keyboards, and creates a uniform musical ambience across the entire disc . . .
